Terms explained
Searches : Number of searches as reported by Overture
Sites : Number of sites reported by MSN containing the key phrase
KEI : Keyword effectiveness – the higher the better

If we had to pick out some hilights to target, we'd have to go for 'ask.com' in conjunction with other topics, and probably 'myspace layouts' in conjucntion with any of the celebrities in the listing : 'zac efron' will do as a starting point. Other than that, use the information as a starting point for your own research.

New Entries

Here are the new entries for the reporting period, along with sample key phrases, and the KEI data following the same principles as above.

Keyword Searches Sites KEI
------------------------- -------- ------------- ---------
ne-yo 19,645 359,466 1,073
kingdom hearts 2 20,677 1,451,500 294
hairstyles 19,596 2,151,484 178
animals 20,013 52,659,474 7

The power of the song 'So Sick' continues to provide Ne-Yo with fame and fortune. Even though this search term enters the chart at a lowly 197, the KEI is high enough for us to recommend targeting it with some well chosen product links.

Top 20

The following is the continuing Top 20, along with their sample key phrases, and KEI data calculated for them. Picking from this list will guarantee the choice of a subject that has substantial logevity prospects.

Keyword Searches Sites KEI
------------------------- -------- ------------- ---------
google 223,094 69,668,581 714
ebay 170,950 38,681,750 755

mapquest 94,397 2,240,561 3,977

carmen electra 85,915 2,955,939 2,497
games 83,579 326,015,358 21
eminem 82,346 19,839,521 341

50 cent 69,720 1,441,726 3,371
anime 65,219 166,747,616 25

We would point out that a high KEI does not necessarily guarantee a good keyword choice, and that the only keywords worth targeting in the Top 20 are those with a good ratio of Sites per Search.

The internet popularity dominance of MySpace.com continues apace, with the best KEI showing and pulling around 4% of search traffic between them, and a low representation (in terms of keywords) on the web as a whole. If the keywords 'myspace' or 'myspace.com' can be leveraged in conjunction with topics appearing in the New Entries or Top Niche report, then this will provide a good targeting strategy.

We believe that it might be a sign of the continuing understanding of new technology that is keeping the Top 10 awash with technical sites (excluding 'girls' and 'lyrics'), with celebrities languishing in the 21-50 slots. Notable exceptions for the usual suspects - 'eminem', 'carmen electra', 'pamela anderson' etc. - but other than that the scales are tipped slightly towards tech sites (8/20 vs 7/20).

For those running celebrity sites, try mixing tech and non-tech search terms ('paris hilton' and 'mapquest' for example) as a way to differentiate offerings from the glut of celebrity styled sites.

From Last Week

Last week we suggested targeting 'chamillionaire'. Those who took the advice should be happy : the term climbed a massive 12 places in the chart (more than twice the median) from last week to this week, accounting for around 0.28% of all traffic. The term also has a respectable niche score too.

We also pointed to MySpace.com, and the two terms related to it continue to do well, as do all the tech related sites that we mentioned.

While we also picked out 'pink' and 'temperature' as possibles too, they do not appear in the Niche report, or Top 20, the former due to low KEI (below the median of 515), and the latter due to insufficient searches. However, the term 'pink' has risen 7 places (above the median) to 186 and accounted for 0.26% of search traffic in the reporting period, and 'temperature' rose 11 places to 175, accounting for 0.27% of search traffic. So we were not all that far out.

Global Statistics

The median number of places climbed by search terms for the period was 5.00, with 62 terms moving up, 97 moving down, and 37 staying put.

The median percentage of searches per term rose from 0.58% to 0.61%, while the mean percentage remained static at 0.74% for the same period.

KEI : Keyword effectiveness – the higher the better

New Entries

Here are the new entries for the reporting period, along with sample key phrases, and the KEI data following the same principles as above.

Keyword Searches Sites KEI
----------------------------------- --------- ---------- ----------
chamillionaire 505,410 97,345 2,624,062
temperature 376,670 24,179,852 5,868
pink 602,303 67,340,410 5,387

The obvious choice is 'chamillionaire', with the other two new entries indicating trends for the future. If these are of any use at all, they will be in providing a starting point for more refined keyword research, but we would recommend directing efforts towards the Niche or Top 10 keyword basket if 'chamillionaire' is of no help in your SEO activities.

Top 10 (New Entries)

The following is the continuing Top 10, along with their sample key phrases, and KEI data calculated for them. Picking from this list will guarantee the choice of a subject that has substantial logevity prospects.

Keyword Searches Sites KEI
----------------------------------- ---------- --------- -----------
google 29,410,556 69,486,113 12,448,254
myspace 14,018,229 1,668,878 117,750,216
ebay 13,185,991 38,369,357 4,531,490
myspace.com 12,757,242 1,298,799 125,305,935
yahoo 11,111,172 106,484,960 1,159,395
mapquest 8,933,286 2,233,680 35,727,409
yahoo.com 7,856,759 4,427,463 13,942,220
lyric 1,978,454 13,962,388 280,345
girl 1,182,756 382,381,061 3,658
paris hilton 892,747 4,356,687 182,937

We would point out that a high KEI does not necessarily guarantee
a good keyword choice, and that the only keywords worth
targeting in the Top 10 are those with a good ratio of Sites per Search.

With the arrival of 'myspace.com', and the continuing dominance of 'myspace' in the Top 10, and an average KEI well in excess of 100 million between them, we would be remiss in not drawing attention to these two. Indeed, it is a good time for those providing quality content covering internet search engines, indexes and content hosts such as Yahoo, Google, eBay and so on; easily targeted keywords, with excellent traffic pulling power.

Of note is that Paris Hilton continues to slide down the Top 10, and fellow celebrities Jessica Simpson and Carmen Electra have quit the top slots recently. However, the 11 to 50 positions reveal that, although the Top 10 is awash with technical sites, the entertainment industry still holds appeal. Of note - Eminem (11), Carmen Electra (13), Jenna Jameson (14), Pamela Anderson (15), Jessica Simpson (18), 50 Cent (19), Chris Brown (21), Jessica Alba (23), Britney Spears (30).

Global Statistics

The median number of places climbed by search terms for the period was 5.00, with 60 terms moving up, 89 moving down, and 46 staying put.

The median percentage of searches per term fell from 0.63% to 0.58%, while the mean percentage also fell from 0.76% to 0.74% for the same period.
